The Magnolia class is composing an original song for the winter show. In it, they celebrate four fall/winter holidays: Diwali |
Edits were made for rhythm purposes, or to make lines rhyme, or to add interest.
The next step in this multi-week process was to add a melody. We determined which chords many holiday songs we could think of use (I, IV, V, ii) and set that aside in our minds for later.
Next, we took the base rhythm we had created in the beginning, which the groups had referred to (loosely) when writing their lyrics. Next, we added solfege syllables (DO/RE/ME/FA/SO/LA/TI/DO) underneath. This gave us a Base Melody.

How we created the Base Melody:
- I told them since it was going to be in a Major key, we should start on Do or So. They chose Do.
- Next, note by note, we chose solfege syllable for each note.
- I helped by singing what they had chosen so far, and they sang that back to me.
- The entire rhythm is eight measures of 4/4 time (32 beats) with an ABAB form. The melody they composed is ABA'B form and is quite beautiful.
Back to the Drawing Board | Once they had the Base Melody, the groups got together and had to work it into the four individual verses they had written, since the rhythm of each verse had deviated from the verse rhythm the class had initially composed. They took the Base Melody and tweaked it a bit to go with the words they had written. The video below was filmed during this process on November 9th. |
Their goal for next week, while I'm out of town, is to finish this process, sing their results to the rest of the class, and then sing the entire thing as a group.
Good luck!!
